One Person, One Vote (Display inside Capitol)The Democratic Party dominated Georgia Politics during most of the twentieth century. The party effectively blocked urban and African American voters from exercising political power. The white primary election system excluded blacks from voting when it counted. The county unit system of tallying votes weighted the outcome in favor of rural Georgians. The US Supreme Court decisions that struck down these systems opened the way for more representative government and the practice of one person, one vote.
